Substitute School Nurse
Position Summary: The purpose of this position is to perform professional nursing duties so as to advance the well-being, safety and academic success of students and staff of the Waltham Public Schools. In addition, the Substitute School Nurse performs nursing services in schools to prevent the spread of illness and disease.
Per-Diem Substitute Nurses
- Building Coverage Nurse Substitutes: $175/Day
- Other Coverage Nurse Substitutes (ex. Field Trips, Health Screenings, etc.): $150/Day
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Respond promptly to emergencies and administers first aid to students/staff.
- Triages student/staff with an injury, illness, or accident and provides appropriate interventions.
- Implements state mandated programs in collaboration with the School Nurse.
- Reviews immunization status for enrolling students to ensure compliance with MA DPH regulations.
- Provides medically prescribed nursing interventions based on state regulations.
- Monitors exclusions and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases.
- Administration of medication in compliance with school policy and state regulations.
- Assists students and families to obtain health care insurance coverage as needed.
- Assists school personnel in identifying health and safety conditions in the school.
- Collaborates with school staff regarding safety plans for handicapped or special needs students.
- Provides individual health instruction for students as needed.
- Reports to parents regarding individual student health issues in a timely manner.
- Reports all suspected cases of child abuse and neglect in compliance with state regulations.
- Maintains a daily log of health service activities using the electronic health record.
- Prepares and submits monthly reports for the Director of Nurses, and all state mandated reports in a timely manner in event of a long term assignment
- Complies with MA Board of Registration of Nursing and MA Department of Education regulations by attending continuing education programs necessary to maintain licensure.
- Performs other responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Nurses.

Supervision Scope:
Supervises students’ health status.
Supervision Given and Received:
Works under the general direction of the Superintendent of Schools and the direct supervision of the building Principal and the Director of Nurses. Is evaluated by the Director of Nurses and the building principal.
Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience:
- Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (ASN or BSN).
- Current CPR and AED certification.
- Nursing experience in child and/or community health.
- MA DESE School Nurse Licensure is a plus but not required.
- Bilingual Preferred (Spanish)
Knowledge Required:
- Knowledge of pediatric health issues and case management.
- Knowledge of current community health issues.
- Knowledge of communicable disease in the community setting.
Abilities Required:
- Ability to provide nursing care to students including assessment of injuries and illness.
- Ability to administer first aid and CPR.
- Ability to respond promptly to emergencies including carrying an emergency bag, climbing stairs, pushing a student in a wheelchair.
- Ability to implement student health screenings as required by the MA Department of Public Health.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, and supervisors.
- Ability to work independently and carry out assigned projects to their completion.
- Ability to use and apply technology including computerization of health data.
Skills Required:
- Skilled in CPR with AED, and first aid for children and adults.
- Skilled in student health assessment and nursing care.
- Skilled in evaluating the health and safety for students within the assigned school.
